Feeling inspired…to live your dreams, to try harder, and be better!

Do you remember asking yourself as a child “what do want to be when you grow older”? If you are like most of us, we note that our tastes change and therefore our dreams change too. But for a few, whose dreams are big and definite, they don’t change; it is likely that it was like this for Tim Peake and now he is literally on his personal space mission orbiting earth and thus, actualising his dream. How amazing is that?

Yet, in business however big the dream, it is important to focus on the attention to detail, getting the basics right and putting the foundations in place. The astronauts’ would not be where they are now without focussing on the attention to detail.

We know that Christmas is fast approaching, so is the new calendar year and whilst this may not be your financial year end, it is a good time to assess where you are as a business.  So, do you ever stop to review what is actually happening operationally on a daily basis, not just analysing the finances monthly, quarterly and annually (because of course you are doing that)?

Do all of your staff arrive on time, every day?

How many employees have had time off work for doctor or dentist appointments this month?

How many days absent have there been this year?

Has everyone taken their full holiday entitlement?

Has the wage bill matched the forecast?

How much have you spent on recruitment, terminations and training?

How many missed calls have been recorded, is this hindering potential business?

How many calls have been made to your prospects?

Do you have the right systems in place to keep costs on track?

These are just a few of the questions worth contemplating on a regular basis and ensure that you and your management team know the answers too.

So, if you don’t already, we would recommend the following:

  1. Have regular meetings in place to discuss the important issues facing your business.
  2. Conduct at least one strategic review meeting per year, to assess what has not been working and what actions you need to take to meet your forecasts in the months ahead.
  3. Put in place the necessary systems to provide you with the statistics and data required to help you make those important decisions, and quickly.
